Low river levels return for another harvest season

Persistent dryness, low river levels and inflated barge freight rates. Sound familiar? Mike Steenhoek, executive director of the Soy Transportation Coalition, was hoping 2023 “would not present a sequel” to 2022. But as of Sept. 5, a half-dozen points along the Mississippi and Ohio rivers had reached or dipped below their low stages.
