Checking out the visibility from the tractor seat proved to be an eye-opening experience for local high school students at Rural Route Safety Days held at Tri-Valley High School Sept. 23 and Olympia High School Sept. 27.

Students had the chance to climb in the tractor cab to see what farmers can see and what they cannot see from the driver’s seat.
Farmer volunteers shared safety tips and personal experiences with close calls or collisions.

Tips for Motorists:

• Slow down as soon as you see a Slow Moving Vehicle symbol
• Avoid driving distracted
• A No Passing Zone means no passing, even if it’s farm equipment
• Watch out for wide turns
• Be visible – if you can’t see a farmer’s mirrors they likely can’t see you
• Pass with caution
• Be patient – following farm equipment for 2 miles will only take 5-6 minutes out of your day

Tips for Farmers:

• Make sure your SMV signs are visible/not faded & all lights are working
• Avoid moving equipment during high traffic times & at dawn or dusk
• Use turn signals and/or hand signals to indicate turns
• Consider using a pilot/escort vehicle if traveling on higher speed roads or longer distances

McLean County Farm Bureau hosted the events to help raise awareness about rural road safety and plans to hold similar events at other local schools in the future.
