China notified the World Trade Organization (WTO) this week it intends to comply with a tariff-rate quota ruling for certain ag products and needs “a reasonable period of time to do so.” The announcement comes after a WTO dispute settlement panel earlier this year found China administered its tariff-rate quotas (TRQ) for wheat, corn and rice inconsistent with its WTO commitments. The ruling stems from a 2016 complaint brought by the United States. Had China’s trade-rate quotas been fully used, USDA estimated that China would have imported as much as $3.5 billion worth of corn, wheat and rice in 2015 alone. (FarmWeekNow)
